Box Score SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Saint Leo Lions continued their hot play in October, making the Eckerd College volleyball team their next victim with a straight-sets win over the Tritons on Tuesday night.
The Lions (14-5, 6-2) remained unbeaten in October, taking all three sets from Eckerd by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20 to sweep the season series.
SLU moved ahead in the first set thanks to a four-point run to take a 6-3 lead, and the team never relinquished it. Another run of four straight points extended the lead to 11-6 and grew to as many as six points before Eckerd pulled back within two points late in the set behind the attack of
Lauryn Nelson and
Katie Arnette. However, the Tritons could get no closer before Saint Leo finished the set off with a kill by Anna Siruckova.
The Lions again jumped ahead early in set two, taking six of the first eight points. Eckerd (11-8, 3-5) battled back to tie the set three times and still trailed by only one point at 16-15 before Saint Leo took control and pulled away for a 25-19 win.
Saint Leo's quick start trend continued in the third set as it built an 11-5 lead, and the Tritons never got closer than four points of the lead for the rest of the set.
Nelson led the way for Eckerd with 14 kills on 23 attempts for a .478 attack percentage.
JaQuayla Baker followed her breakout performance last weekend with eight kills on 15 attempts.
Kaitlyn Sibson had 16 digs to lead the defense.
The Tritons return to play on Friday as they travel to face Embry-Riddle (Fla.) at 7:00 PM.
