Box Score TAMPA, Fla. - The No. 23 Eckerd men's soccer team's bid for an unbeaten conference season came to an end on Wednesday night as the Tritons fell at the University of Tampa, 3-1.
It was the second straight loss for Eckerd (7-2-1, 3-1-1), but the Tritons still remain in first place in the Sunshine State Conference standings by one point over Tampa.
Neither team scored in the first half of tonight's match, although the Spartans (7-4, 3-1) had more chances with 10 shots to Eckerd's three.
Alex Gott stopped six Tampa attempts in the half to help keep things scoreless.
However, the Spartans finally broke through early in the second half when Monty Berrow slipped a shot past Gott in the 57th minute.
Eckerd equalized the match 10 minutes later after
Jordan Lee slid a pass to
Juan David Tejada at the top of the box. Tejada was able to turn and fire a shot past UT keeper Christian Knight to knot the score at 1-1.
The match didn't remain tied for long, though, as the Spartans retook the lead less than a minute later thanks to a free kick by Keith Francisco. Tampa then added an insurance goal in the 86th minute on a strike by Dominick Mondesir.
The Spartans out-shot Eckerd on the night, 21-9, and only allowed the Tritons to place one shot on goal. Gott saved eight shots for EC.
Eckerd returns to the Turley Athletic Complex on Saturday to host Lynn University at 7:00 PM in its final home match of the regular season. The program's seniors will be honored before the match.
