Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Saturday marked the first time this season the Eckerd College women's basketball team lost to a top 25 opponent at home falling to Florida Tech, 72-65.
Rana Thomas put EC on the board first with a layup off the glass. The Panthers answered back grabbing the lead and pulling out to an early 13-6 lead.
Margaret Sundberg brought her team within four hitting a deep three.
Kayla Bowlin sent a beautiful pass into Thomas for two drawing the foul and completing the three point play to give Eckerd their second lead of the half. FIT then pulled off an 11-2 run to go up nine, 26-17.
Trine Kasemagi hit back-to-back free throws then drove the lane for two points on the team's next possession to tie it up at 34-34. The Panthers hit a three in the final minute to take a 37-34 lead into halftime.
Tech jumped out in front starting off on a 9-0 run to begin the final 20 minutes. The Tritons would then play catchup for the remainder of the game. FIT pulled out to a 13 point lead, 55-42, midway through the second half.
Ivana Grbic went to the line knocking down both of her free throws.
Victoria Vine was then able to create a steal and give it to Thomas who sent it ahead to Bowlin for two, putting EC within seven. With under three minutes to play Vine knocked down a trey bringing the score to 63-59. It would be as close at Eckerd would get as the Panthers walked away with the 72-65 victory.
Kasemagi continues her stellar freshman campaign dropping 19 points for the second consecutive game. Thomas ended the night with 16 points and six assists while Vine came away with 15 points.
Eckerd (15-5, 5-4) will hit the road and take on No. 20 Nova Southeastern on Wednesday. The game is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
