Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College volleyball team snapped their losing streak and took down the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday in a thrilling five set match.
Eckerd (8-5, 1-4) won their first conference match of the season as they defeated the Lions (7-4, 2-2).
"I am so proud of our girls for stepping up to the challenge," said Head Coach,
Michelle Piantadosi. "Our upperclassmen did a great job leading on the court tonight."
Seniors,
Ali McAlvany and
Grace Jones, led the charge tabbing 12 kills apiece.
In a tough fought first set,
Madison Whiting tallied four kills as the Tritons fell to open up the match.
Eckerd stormed the court taking set two with authority led by McAlvany who earned her eighth double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs.
Set three was controlled by Saint Leo but the match wasn't over yet as EC came out to set four determined to push it to five.
In the final set, both teams were neck and neck until Eckerd pulled ahead and took home the victory.
Tjasa Kotnik and
Lauryn Nelson led the way, each tallied 10 kills on the night.
"We had to dig deep for this win against a strong team," said Piantadosi. "We hope to use this momentum for our next match."
The Tritons are back in action in the McArthur Center Wednesday night as they will face No. 1 University of Tampa. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
