Volleyball Sweeps Two in Home Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – A total of eight matches went final in the McArthur Center as the first day of competition at the fourth annual Eckerd College Volleyball Classic concluded Friday evening.

With Eckerd playing host, The Tritons (5-1, 0-0) defended their court in the program's home opener, sweeping University of Mary (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) in match one. The team then took care of Daemen College in the nightcap (18-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-15) in separate 3-1 decisions.

Triton's newcomer Lauryn Nelson ripped a team high 12 kills on 15 attacks in the opener against the Marauders (1-6, 0-0) to hit an astounding .733, as she made her debut in the McArthur Center.

Ali McAlvany was not far behind Nelson, tallying 11 kills to help lead the Triton's offense to a victory in match one.

Eckerd hit .353, .250, and .542 to finish off the Marauders in three sets.

Katie Arnette drilled six kills on eight attempts to finish with a massive .750 attacking percentage. Kaitlyn Sibson helped on offense from the libero position producing three service aces along with 14 digs on the defensive side.

After succumbing to Daemen in the first set, Eckerd bounced back quick to take the next three by storm.

Grace Jones led the charge in match two as she tallied 14 kills on 20 attacks to finish with a hitting percentage of .600.

With the match already in the Triton's hands, Emily Schadow and Arnette put it out of reach tallying up a combined eight service aces.

On day one of the Classic, Schadow tallied up an astounding 50 assists to help the Triton offense prevail.

Eight more matches are scheduled to get underway tomorrow morning beginning at 10:30 with University of Puerto Rico – Rio Piedras and University of Mary squaring off. 

Eckerd will take on UPR – Rio Piedras at 3:00 p.m. and then finish out the tournament against Chadron State at 7:00 p.m.
