ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – On short rest after hosting No. 23 University of Tampa yesterday, the Eckerd College women's tennis program closed out the regular season with a defeat at the hands of No. 7 Saint Leo University on Saturday, 9-0.
The Tritons (5-11, 0-8 SSC) will now wait for seeding in the bracket for the upcoming Sunshine State Conference Championship.
The Lions (15-4, 4-3 SSC), also ranked third in the South Region, were anchored by regionally-ranked Laura Kemkes (No. 15) in singles competition.
"I am proud of all the women this year," summed up EC head coach
Ben Maxwell. "Some battled injuries throughout the whole semester but they stayed strong and competed all year."
"We are looking forward to next year's possibilities and we will continue to grow and mature as a team," he added. "It has been a very positive year for the women and they should all be proud."
Carson Trapp, one of five juniors on the team with a freshman, matched up against Kemkes in the No. 2 singles battle.
Gipson Hawn was able to earn three games in each set as she squared off against Coralie Pesenti in the No. 1 contest.
Saint Leo was able to emerge with all six singles victories in straight-set fashion.
All three Eckerd doubles pairings were able to win a game against their Saint Leo counterparts as the Lions prevailed by 8-1, 8-3 and 8-4 scores, respectively.
