Baseball Ends Saint Thomas’ Win Streak in Doubleheader Split, 6-4 and 7-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College baseball team eventually snapped a 10-game win streak for Saint Thomas University, splitting a doubleheader with a 6-4 loss and 7-3 triumph on Thursday at the Turley Athletic Complex.

The Tritons (5-3, 0-0 SSC) were originally scheduled to meet with the Bobcats (15-2, 8-1 TSC) for a single game on Wednesday night and a single game this evening at the Al Lang Stadium in downtown St. Petersburg, but poor weather caused the games to be rescheduled and moved to the Turley Athletic Complex.

Saint Thomas 6, Eckerd 4

Saint Thomas put together a three-run fifth inning that would give it enough insurance runs to hold off the Tritons in game one.

The Bobcats put up two runs early on in the first inning after a leadoff walk resulted in a run. The inning continued with two, two-out singles from Paul Chacin and Elim Perritte to bring in the second run.

Eckerd cut the Bobcats' lead in half after sophomore Matt MacMahon plated Chris Hanson following a sacrifice fly.

In the fifth, Saint Thomas scored three runs with two outs, including a two-run triple to right field by Jerry Downs. Chacin tallied the Bobcats' fourth straight two-out hit on a single to left-center to score Downs and give Saint Thomas a 5-1 lead.

The Tritons continued to chip away at Saint Thomas' lead, adding one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but would ultimately fall short.

Freshman lefty starter Brandon Valentin picked up the win and tossed 6.1 innings while allowing four runs and striking out three. Downs led the Bobcats' offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.

For the Tritons, both Lincoln Dunham and Lucas Luopa (pair of doubles) were 2-for-3 on the night.

Eckerd 7, Saint Thomas 3

In game two, a fourth-inning single to third base from senior Chris Hanson would score sophomore Rowdy Andrews  -- who would account for the game-winning run -- as the Tritons went on to win 7-3.

The Tritons scored their first run of the game in the second inning on three consecutive one-out singles from MacMahon,  Luopa and James Petika. Petika ended a 10 1/3-inning scoreless streak by freshman Saint Thomas starter Alex Perez with his RBI single.

Eckerd added two more runs in the third on an RBI single from Grant Banko and a two-out single from MacMahon -- both on payoff pitches will full counts -- to pull ahead 3-2.

But with the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Hanson's two-out hit to score Andrews would give the Tritons its final lead of the night as they would hold the Bobcats scoreless for the final three innings.

The Tritons also added three runs insurance runs in the fifth. Sophomore Carter Cashman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a single from MacMahon. Luopa moved Cashman and MacMahon into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, and a double down the left-field line from Petika would score both runs.

Andrews singled to left-center field to bring in Petika for Eckerd's final run of the game.

Junior Jimmy Gutowski got the start and tossed five innings to earn the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks and struck out six. Gutowski is now 4-0 on the season.

MacMahon headed the Tritons' offense, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Petika also added a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI and one run scored.

Eckerd will travel to Kissimmee on Saturday to face Johnson University (formerly known as Florida Christian College) for a doubleheader beginning at noon. The game will potentially feature live stats and an audio broadcast on EckerdTritons.com.
