Second-Half Momentum Drives Men’s Basketball in Decisive Win Over Tampa, 76-49

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's basketball team took down Sunshine State Conference second-place University of Tampa with a commanding 76-49 win on Wednesday night at the Bob Martinez Center.

Following tonight's results from around the conference, Eckerd climbed into a three-way tie for fourth in the regular-season standings along with Barry University and Nova Southeastern University.

The Spartans' (15-8, 8-6 SSC) 49 points were the fewest points they have put up in a full game all season.

Eckerd (15-10, 7-6 SSC) trailed Tampa by three nearly halfway through the first half, but a three-pointer from senior Alex Bodney tied the score at 13, and the Spartans called timeout.

Bodney's three-point shot also triggered the start of a 9-0 run for the Tritons that would put Eckerd in the lead for the remainder of the game.

At the break Eckerd led by seven, 32-25, and continued to build momentum in the final 20 minutes.

An 11-4 run to open the second half -- also initiated by Bodney -- secured a double-digit lead, and Eckerd would build its advantage by as much as 30 on a layup from sophomore E.J. Moody with 5:13 left in the game.

The Tritons held Tampa to just under 42 percent shooting from the field, while connecting at nearly 52 percent as a team.

Senior Josh Snodgrass tallied 24 points and was one point shy of tying his career-high scoring mark previously set last Wednesday vs. No. 10 Florida Southern College.

Bodney (17), sophomore Jerrick Stevenson (13) and junior Malcolm Brunner Jr. (10) also added scoring in double digits.

Eckerd returns home on Saturday afternoon to face Florida Tech at 4 p.m. EST in the McArthur Center.
