BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's tennis team dropped its Sunshine State Conference opener on the road to No. 4 Lynn University
on Saturday afternoon, 9-0.
The Fighting Knights (4-0, 1-0 SSC) ended up sweeping singles action in straight sets and claimed the three decisive doubles decisions against the Tritons (0-2, 0-1 SSC).
The Tritons faced Lynn in just their second outing of the spring season. Eckerd contested Northwood University to a 5-4 decision in its first match of the season.
"All of the men fought hard against a very talented and highly-ranked team in our conference," said EC interim head coach
Ben Maxwell. "I'm especially proud of Yosua (Adiyasa) and Frazier (Springfield), who nearly pulled out a huge upset against Lynn's No. 1 doubles team."
"Luke (Burton) and Eddie (Lewis) also had a close match in their doubles bout that could have gone either way," he added. "We will all continue to work hard and look forward to the rest of the season."
Sophomores
Yosua Adiyasa and
Frazier Springfield opened doubles play by nearly defeating Daniel Riggs and Paolo Volpocelli in a closely contested 9-8 (7-5) final.
Junior
Luke Burton and freshman
Eddie Lewis also fell in a close 8-5 final to Javier Anegon and Zdenek Sevik.
Adiyasa had the best outing for the Tritons in the singles lineup. He fell 6-3 and 6-2 to No. 17 Vlad Cirla in the No. 1 slot.
Eckerd will continue its Sunshine State Conference schedule on the road
next Tuesday afternoon at Florida Southern College in
Lakeland. The Tritons will take on the Moccasins starting at
3 p.m. in Lakeland.
