Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Eckerd women's basketball team showed their defensive prowess as they defeated Paine College, 63-45 on Saturday.
Ivana Grbic had a dominant presence on defense as she pulled down ten rebounds throughout the contest, her highest of the season. Fellow senior
Rana Thomas continued her electrifying senior campaign throwing down 21 points on the day to go along with five rebounds.
In the 12 minute,
Kayla Bowlin dropped in her third-three pointer of the half as she gave the Tritons the lead, 16-10. The Lions would fight back and knock home five unanswered points before a quick pass off from Bowlin to Thomas who drove through the paint to the basket.
Bowlin drained her fourth three-pointer with two minutes left and sent the Tritons into the half, 27-23.
Eckerd came out of the half hot and went on an 8-2 run against Paine.
Margaret Sundberg gave EC their biggest lead of the night as she threw up a deep three bringing the score to 40-28.
Quick thinking by Thomas tacked on two more points for the Tritons within 30 seconds.
Grbic's offense came alive in the second half as she shot 3-for-4 from the field. Eckerd dropped in 11 unanswered points before the Lions could put a few on the board. Thomas gave EC a 25 point lead with a strong drive for a layup.
Sunderberg tacked on two more points with under two minutes remaining to bring the final score to 63-45.
Thomas led the team in points with 21 and Bowlin finished second best with 12. Sundberg set a new career high as she grabbed 11 points on the night and Grbic finished just two points shy of a double-double.
The Tritons will be back in the McArthur Center on Wednesday as they are set to face off with Albany State University. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
