Box Score TAMPA, Fla. – Battling the top team in the nation Wednesday night, the Eckerd College volleyball team took the University of Tampa to four sets, falling 3-1.
A back and forth battle ensued at the beginning of the first set with Eckerd holding an 11-9 lead. UT took the lead before
Mackenzie Redner served up an ace to tie it up, 14-14. The Spartans proceeded to go on a 9-2 run and eventually take the first set, 25-18.
Tampa came out to take an early lead in set two. The Tritons fought to comeback but fell short, 25-16.
Opening the third set with an ace,
Madison Whiting set the tempo for Eckerd early with the points staying neck and neck until the end. Down one, 25-24,
Tjasa Kotnik drilled a game tying kill. EC went on to score two consecutive points to take the set, 27-25.
The Tritons fell behind early in the fourth set and were never able to recover with Tampa taking the set, 25-14, and the match.
Leading the way in kills with 13, Kotnik continues her offensive hot streak earning double-digit kills in five of the team's last seven matches.
Emily Schadow was dishing out the assists ending the night with 26.
Kaitlyn Sibson managed 14 digs while Whiting finished behind her with nine.
Eckerd (12-15, 3-11) will host No. 21 Palm Beach Atlantic (26-3) on Saturday. It will be the final home game of the 2014 season for the Tritons who will honor their seniors before the start of the contest at 2 pm.
