Eckerd Grabs Road Win Over Flagler

Box Score

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Eckerd College women's basketball team downed Flagler College on the road Wednesday night, defeating the Saints, 79-68.

EC jumped out in front quick scoring the first basket of the contest and then continued to stretch their lead. The Tritons went on a three minute 7-2 run to give them a 16-7 lead early in the first half. A steal by Ivana Grbic led to a three pointer by Margaret Sundberg to give her team a 10 point lead, up 23-13 midway through the second half.

The largest lead of the first 20 minutes came after Kayla Bowlin drilled home a shot from three point land putting Eckerd up by 16 with under five minutes remaining. Flagler outscored EC 7-2 in the final two and a half minutes with the Tritons taking a 38-25 lead into the locker room.

Shooting 71.4 percent from the floor in the first half, the Tritons went 4 for 4 shooting free throws while going 4 for 5 from behind the three point line.

Both teams came out in the second half draining their open shots. The Saints and Tritons traded baskets for the first four minutes on the floor. FC went to a press defense and began to climb their way back into the game.

At the 10:00 mark, the Saints had cut the lead to nine. Flagler's Treva Mason put in layup followed by a foul shot bringing her team within seven, down 55-48 with 6:26 remaining in the game.

With under three minutes left in regulation, the Saints took a steal down the court for a layup cutting the Tritons lead to two, 62-60. Sarah Ammons responded with a clutch jump shot to give her team a four point lead. Solid ball movement and good foul shooting down the stretch clinched the victory for Eckerd, 79-68.

"Our team shot very well tonight," said Head Coach, Paul Honsinger. "We kept our composure when the game got close and stuck to our brand of basketball. A win on the road like this is great for the team"

Rana Thomas led the team in scoring with 22 points while Trine Kasemagi was unstoppable down low picking up 20 points of her own. Grbic was trying to get everyone involved in the scoring as she dished out 10 assists to go along with nine points.

Eckerd (2-1) will host the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez in their home opener on Monday. Tip-off inside the McArthur Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
