Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Seniors shined for the Eckerd College women's soccer team on Wednesday night in a 1-0 shutout victory over Florida Southern.
Katie Shafer took the first shot early in the contest, but the Tritons would only manage one more shot on goal in the first half.
Both defenses settled in and played bend but don't break soccer to go into halftime tied at 0-0.
Seconds into the second half
Arie Anahory got off a clean shot but the FSC goalkeeper came up with a big save to keep EC off the board.
In the 60
th minute a penalty in the box by the Mocs resulted in a penalty kick by Anahory and this time she would not be denied. The conference leader in goals coming into the contest notched her 11
th on the season to put her team up 1-0.
The defense stayed tight and played perfect throughout the second half with goalkeeper
Morgan Crescent pulling in three second half saves to preserve the win.
The 1-0 shutout was not just an ordinary win. For the senior keeper it was a record breaking shutout four years in the making passing Kathy Atkins (1999-02) in career shutouts at Eckerd with 17.
"I completely forgot about the record," said Crescent. "I was sitting there after the game and looked up at the scoreboard and realized we won 1-0, then it hit me."
For her effort, Crescent received an ice cold bucket of water over her head as the entire team celebrated the feat.
She went on to say, "I could not have done it without the 10 other girls on the field tonight and throughout my career for that matter."
For Eckerd, the win marks two straight to open conference heading into the weekend.
"Our defense was awesome tonight," said Head Coach,
Danielle Fotopoulos. "The whole team stepped up for this win and that says a lot."
When asked about starting 2-0 in the conference Fotopoulos said, "It's a great start, but we have to take it one game at a time. We'll get back and prepare for Florida Tech this weekend."
The Tritons (6-3, 2-0) look to carry momentum into Saturday when they host Florida Tech (4-6-1, 1-3). The game is slated to begin at 4:30 pm. at the Turley Athletic Complex.
