Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College volleyball team came from behind in multiple sets to defeat Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Wednesday night, 3-1.
Tjasa Kotnik led the Tritons on the night hitting an astounding .458 and tallying a season best 14 kills to take down the Eagles.
After falling in set one, EC battled back from behind in every match of the night to break Embry-Riddle's (9-7, 5-1) seven game winning streak.
"We didn't start as strong as we wanted tonight but I am proud of the way the girls picked up their focus and carried over the things we've been concentrating on in practice," said Head Coach
Michelle Piantadosi.
Set two was dominated by Kotnik who nabbed seven kills leading EC to a win, 25-22. This victory was a huge momentum changer in the match and proved to be all the Tritons needed to prevail.
Ali McAlvany and
Lauryn Nelson continued to show their strength on the court as both tallied nine kills apiece. McAlvany also grabbed 12 digs finishing just one kill short of a double-double.
Set three was a huge come from behind victory for the Tritons as they were down 12-5 and rallied to take the match, 25-22.
Setters
Emily Schadow and
Gabriella Reis Guimaraes nabbed 24 and 22 assists on the night, respectively.
The fourth set was dominated by the Tritons as they defeated the Eagles, 25-14.
Grace Jones and
Katie Arnette provided the power for the final set as each tabbed three and four kills to close out the match.
Libero
Kaitlyn Sibson was speedy and agile in the back row as she picked up a team high 15 kills.
Piantadosi added, "Tjasa and Grace contributed to our offensive momentum and as a result we finished the match strong."
The Tritons (9-7, 1-5 SSC) will be back in SSC play Friday, as they play host to Florida Tech on Friday. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
