Box Score 2 Lakeland, Fla. – The Eckerd College volleyball team split on day one of the Florida Southern/ South Region Crossover, defeating Valdosta State in game one before falling to No. 22 West Florida in game two on Friday.
Eckerd volleyball opened up day one of the Crossover in a dramatic five set match against Valdosta State.
Going back and forth for each set, the match belonged to no one as both teams fought valiantly to take the lead.
Set one went to Eckerd as
Tjasa Kotnik and
Lauryn Nelson rattled off six kills each, leading the Tritons to a 25-22 victory.
After falling in set two, 16-25, EC came back strong stealing set three, 25-21.
Ali McAlvany nabbed her 10
th double-double of the year as the Tritons fell in set four, 19-25.
The Tritons gave the Blazers all they had in set five and walked away with the victory, 15-12.
Kotnik and Nelson each had 17 kills throughout the match as both set new career marks.
Emily Schadow contributed 30 assists as
Kaitlyn Sibson grabbed 22 digs in the win.
The Tritons met up with the nationally ranked West Florida Argonauts in game two.
In the first set, Eckerd jumped out to a 6-1 lead and pulled out the win, 27-25.
The Argonauts got up on EC early in the second set coming away with a 25-15 victory giving each team one set a piece.
Set three and four belonged to West Florida as they claimed both sets by the score of 25-20 to take the match.
McAlvany claimed her second double-double of the day with 13 kills and 13 digs as she continues a stellar senior campaign.
Madison Whiting finished right behind McAlvany with 12 kills of her own while Sibson tabbed another 20 digs to give her 42 on the day.
"I'm hoping that we can get the same offensive production that we had in our first match," said Head Coach,
Michelle Piantadosi. "We are all looking forward to our match tomorrow against Lee."
EC won't have to wait long to get back on the court as they will be in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the Lee University Flames.
