ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College women's tennis program pushed No. 17 Florida Southern College to a pair of third-set tiebreakers in singles action, but dropped a decision at the Turley Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon, 9-0.
Sophomore
Taylor Bullock and senior
Amanda Teets each pushed their respective opponent into extras after splitting a set, but the Mocs (2-2, 1-1 SSC) would eventually prevail.
The Tritons (0-3, 0-3 SSC) faced their third straight nationally-ranked opponent inside the Sunshine State Conference to begin the spring season.
At the No. 4 spot, Bullock took the first set against Laura Wichmann , 6-4, before the Moc earned a 6-3 win in the second set and came through with a 10-4 win in the tiebreaker.
FSC's Crystal Copeland also needed a third-set tiebreaker at the No. 6 spot against
Amanda Teets as she won the first set, 6-4, before falling 7-6 in the second set and then emerged on top from a 13-11 marathon in the tiebreaker.
In doubles action, the Mocs won all three matches, including its 12th-ranked No. 1 team of Magda Riutort and Sabine Goge posting an 8-1 win over EC's
Gipson Hawn and
Erika Fridrik.
FSC's No. 3 team of Crystal Copeland and Pamela Paradis picked up an 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot over Bullock/Tees while the No. 3 doubles duo of Victoria Spagnuola and Christie Nunnemann rallied to win against
Manon Ironside and
Carson Trapp, 8-6, to complete the sweep.
The Tritons will take to the road on Friday, heading to Fort Lauderdale to face Nova Southeastern University at 1 p.m.
