ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – With two of the nation's top 20-ranked players anchoring the lineup, fourth-ranked Lynn University downed the Eckerd College women's tennis program on Sunday morning at the Turley Athletic Complex, 9-0.
The Tritons (0-1, 0-0 SSC) opened their new campaign after a handful of freshmen received valuable seasoning in their first year at the collegiate level in 2011-12.
Coming in as the top-ranked team in the South Region by the International Tennis Association, the Fighting Knights (2-0, 1-0 SSC) picked up their second win in the young season.
“Today was a tough match, but I was very proud of both teams and how competitive they were against a very tough Lynn team,” said EC Head Coach Erin Koenig. “We came away with a lot of positives today that I think we will definitely be able to add to our next match.”
Lynn's Val Confolanieri and Ioana Ivan, ranked 10th and 15th nationally, headlined the singles matchups as the Tritons battled with sophomores
Carson Trapp and
Gipson Hawn.
Seniors
Manon Ironside and
Amanda Teets competed in the No. 3 and No. 6 positions in singles action while sophomore
Taylor Bullock and
Erika Fridrik made their season debuts at No. 4 and No. 5 in the lineup, respectively.
Two of the Fighting Knights' doubles pairings came in nationally ranked and Lynn claimed all three matches.
Eckerd will have a week to practice for the arrival of No. 18 Florida Tech as Sunshine State Conference action resumes next Sunday. The Tritons and Panthers will get underway at 12:30 p.m.
