WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Sophomore Ray Darnell recorded his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't quite enough as the Eckerd College men's basketball team fell to Palm Beach Atlantic University, 73-68, in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at Rubin Arena.
The loss snapped the Tritons' (4-3, 0-0 SSC) four-game win streak, while Palm Beach Atlantic (2-6 overall) picked up its second win of the season.
Evin Graham led all scorers with 18 points as he sank 5-of-8 shots from the floor and 7-of-8 from the line to contribute to the Sailfish's 86 percent free-throw average. He also grabbed 10 rebounds. Clayton Williams (14), Matthew Gierl (10) and Christian Martinez (10) also added double-digit scoring.
Darnell made 6-of-8 tries from the field and was 2-of-4 from the free-throw line for the Tritons. Sophomore Jerrick Stevenson added a team-high 16 points, while senior Josh Snodgrass tabbed 13 points and senior Alex Bodney scored 11.
Sophomore starting point guard E.J. Moody was inactive due to an undisclosed injury. He was replaced in the starting five by Snodgrass.
Eckerd managed to connect at 41 percent (23-of-56) shooting from the field.
At the conclusion of the first half, the Tritons trailed by seven. As the final 20 minutes commenced, the Sailfish eventually led by as many as 15, but with just under five minutes remaining, two made free-throws from Snodgrass cut the lead to just one.
However, turnovers plagued the Tritons in the remaining minutes and a three-pointer from Gierl led to seven unanswered points for Palm Beach Atlantic as the Sailfish led 63-55 with nearly three minutes remaining in the game.
With only six seconds remaining, the Tritons had cut the lead to only two, but fouls sent the Sailfish to the line in the bonus situation to close out the win.
Eckerd returns home on Monday, Dec. 16 against Dominican (N.Y.) College at 7:30 p.m. EST in the McArthur Center.
