LAKELAND, Fla. – The Eckerd College volleyball team's win streak continued
Wednesday night as it traveled to defeat Florida Southern College on the road in straight sets, 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 26-24).
The Tritons (16-8, 7-4 SSC) collected their seventh consecutive victory -- the longest win streak of the season -- and their second sweep this season over the Mocs (19-9, 8-4 SSC), who came into the night ranked second in the Sunshine State Conference.
Eckerd also brought out the brooms against the Mocs earlier this year in St. Petersburg on
Oct. 2, representing the program's first-ever sweep against FSC.
Earlier today, Florida Southern was revealed at the No. 2 slot in the first edition of the NCAA South Region rankings, while the Tritons opened in seventh. The Mocs also received four votes in the most recent AVCA Top-25 Coaches' Poll.
In the first set, the Tritons and Moccasins were tied at 19-19, when Eckerd took five straight points to cement its lead. A kill from
Lindsay Biggs and
Katarina Milojevic along with a service ace from
Kaleigh Humphrey and two Florida Southern attacking errors brought the Tritons to set point.
After relinquishing two points to Florida Southern, Eckerd took the set on a Mocs' service error.
The Tritons pulled away from Florida Southern again in the second set, aided by solid offensive play from
Tjasa Kotnik,
Ana de Olano and
Ali McAlvany. Kotnik and de Olano picked up three kills, while McAlvany added four kills in the set.
In the decisive third set, Eckerd and Florida Southern battled back and forth, point-for-point. With Moccasins leading 23-22, McAlvany scored two kills to give Eckerd the lead.
After a kill from Florida Southern's Kendall Marotti, Eckerd secured the win in the Jenkins Field House on two Mocs' attacking errors.
Milojevic led the Tritons' offense, going 10-for-16 for a .500 attacking percentage. Milojevic also picked up three block assists.
McAlvany contributed a team-high 12 kills along with seven digs as she climbed over 900 in her All-American career to date. Biggs tallied a match-high 18 digs.
Senior setter
Madison Burr posted her fifth double-double of the season with 21 assists and 10 digs. Burr is third all-time at Eckerd in career assists (2,536).
The Tritons continue with their week on the road this weekend, taking on No. 2 University of Tampa
on Friday at 7 p.m. EST in the Martinez Center and Rollins College in Winter Park
on Saturday at 4 p.m. EST.
