MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University converted a decisive goal midway through the second half to end the regular season and coinciding postseason aspirations for the Eckerd College men's soccer program on Saturday afternoon, 1-0.
Thomas Coombes was the beneficiary of a Nico Gercke chipped pass inside the box and dealt the only blow in the 61st minute as the Buccaneers (8-8-1, 5-3-0 SSC) prevailed on their Senior Day.
The Tritons (4-11-2, 2-6-0 SSC) were in position to control their own destiny to earn one of the final seeds up for grabs to the Sunshine State Conference Championship, but fell just shy of qualifying for the third consecutive season.
Florida Tech and Eckerd both finished with 2-6 records in league play while the University of Tampa was able to squeeze in as the No. 6 seed in the bracket for the upcoming conference tournament.
Following a scoreless first half, Coombes notched his seventh goal of the fall season after the Buccaneers earned a gradual edge in total shots as the match progressed.
Barry outshot the Tritons, 13-4, in the first 45 minutes of regulation before breaking through against a resilient effort from the Eckerd defense in the final period.
The Tritons ended the second half with six more shots against Barry keeper Johnny Rodrigues, but were unable to push home the equalizer as time eventually ran out.
A combined total of nine cards (four yellow for EC, five yellow for Barry) were booked in the final match of the season.
Both teams battled to a scoreless double-overtime draw in a previous meeting this fall in St. Petersburg in non-conference format on Sept. 25.
