Morse’s Goal Pushes Women’s Soccer Past Florida Southern for First Conference Win, 1-0

Box Score
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Sophomore Devon Morse netted a goal in the 46th minute to catapult the Eckerd College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Florida Southern College on Tuesday night.

The win gives Eckerd (6-4-0, 1-1-0 SSC) its first Sunshine State Conference win of the season, while Florida Southern (1-7-3, 0-2-0 SSC) drops its fourth consecutive game. The Tritons avenged a pair of regular-season defeats suffered last year against the Mocs.

It was a defensive battle as both teams held each other scoreless through the first half of play. Although Florida Southern maintained possession for the majority of the half, it notched just three shots, while sophomore Taylor Tippett accounted for Eckerd's lone shot in the first half.

Just a minute into the second half, Morse broke away from Florida Southern's defense and sent a shot from the deep right side of the field past a diving Erin Moseley, Florida Southern's goalkeeper, to find the back of the net.

The goal was Morse's third on the season -- tying her total for goals scored last season as a freshman.

The Mocs managed to outshoot the Tritons 14 to four, belting out 11 shots in the second half, including four on goal. Each time EC goalkeeper Morgan Crescent was there to make the save. Crescent collected six saves in the win.

The Eckerd defense clamped down on talented forward and FSC's leading scorer Kara Moore, who netted a hat trick in one of the 2012 meetings against the Tritons.

Florida Southern made a final push in the 87th minute in an attempt to equalize the score as Christine Knudstrup took a shot that was blocked by a large grouping of both Eckerd and Florida Southern players clumped in the box.

Junior Jackie Metz accounted for six of Florida Southern's shots, including two on goal.

The Tritons remain at home on Friday, Oct. 11, when it hosts Florida College at 7 p.m. EST at the Turley Athletic Complex.
