ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College women's soccer team battled with Nova Southeastern University through a torrential downpour in a Sunshine State Conference overtime loss
on Tuesday night, 2-1.
The Tritons (7-7-0, 1-4-0 SSC) clashed with the Sharks (5-8-1, 1-4-1 SSC) for nearly 96 minutes before Nova Southeastern was able to end the match.
Junior midfielder
Erin Davis struck first for Eckerd in the eighth minute of regulation. Davis sent the ball sailing over NSU goalkeeper Rachel Lopez's head as she took her left-footed shot from about 30 yards out in the far left corner.
The goal was her second of the season.
The Sharks answered with a tying goal of their own in the 37th minute when sophomore Tori Vives netted her first goal of the season in front of the box.
As the rain continued to fall at the Turley Athletic Complex, the Tritons and the Sharks continued to fight through the second half. Despite both teams' best efforts, a scoreless half sent the game into overtime.
In the 95th minute, sophomore Stephanie Moench took a shot on Eckerd's goal. EC goalkeeper
Morgan Crescent was there to block the shot, but the ball deflected back out into play where Nova Southeastern defenseman Dilja Olafsdottir was perfectly positioned to knock in the game-winning goal.
Crescent and sophomore forward
Devon Morse were both attended to because of various injuries sustained during scary collisions in the second half that stopped the clock.
Eckerd will look to get back on track on the road this weekend against Rollins College
on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. EST at Barker Family Stadium.
