LAKELAND, Fla. – The seventh-seeded Eckerd College men's tennis program was eliminated from championship contention with a quarterfinal loss against No. 2 seed Rollins College on Thursday at the Florida Blue Sunshine State Conference Championship, 5-0.
Interrupted by heavy rainfall during the match, the Tritons (0-17) moved down into the drawbacks after falling against the Tars (15-6) and have a chance to achieve sixth place in consolation.
Eckerd will square off next against No. 6 seed Florida Tech tomorrow morning at the Beerman Tennis Center at noon. The Panthers fell victim to third-seeded Barry University in the opening round.
Ranked sixth in the latest International Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, Rollins took care of business in doubles, sweeping all three decisions.
After the Tritons were defeated by the 10th-best tandem (according to the ITA) in Lucas Jovita/Jason Alabaster, Eckerd put up a strong fight in the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles slots, with 8-5 being the final respective scoring.
The Tars used the momentum to cruise in singles, blanking the Tritons in just two matchups to clinch the match.
