WINTER PARK, Fla. – In a bid to make the postseason and the encompassing Sunshine State Conference Tournament, the Eckerd College women's tennis program closed the spring season on Friday afternoon with a loss against 12th-ranked Rollins College, 9-0.
After falling against the University of Tampa earlier this week, the Tritons (3-15, 0-9 SSC) were put into a must-win situation in yesterday's make-up game against the nationally-ranked Tars (11-9, 4-4 SSC).
The SSC Tournament is hosted by Florida Southern College in Lakeland beginning next Thursday.
“This year has been a tough year,” EC assistant coach
Ben Maxwell summed up. “We played some very tough teams, but in the long run, I think it will pay off. I have seen great improvement in everyone's game as the season progressed and we still have a long ways to go to contend in the conference.”
“I expect the girls to continue to train hard, play tournaments throughout the summer and come back in the fall better than this year,” he continued. “We will start practice again in September.”
In the 2012 campaign the Tritons collected three wins as a team, all in the month of March, while relying heavily on a freshman-laden lineup with six rookies and one senior,
Stephanie Jenks.
Bullock led the Tritons with six wins individually and the doubles duo of
Carson Trapp and
Katie Benn equaled her number in the win column in doubles competition.
Gipson Hawn added four wins in singles competition while Benn tallied three and
Erika Fridrik/Trapp each recorded two.
Against the Tars, Eckerd fell in straight sets down the singles rotation and doubles competition also favored Rollins.
