Katie Benn emerged from a first-set tiebreaker and proceeded to take care of business in doubles with her partner
Carson Trapp as the Eckerd College women's tennis program battled Palm Beach Atlantic University in defeat on Saturday, 7-2.
The Tritons (3-9 overall) couldn't stop the red-hot Sailfish (10-2) in the regional clash at the Turley Athletic Complex, who ran their win streak to seven straight on the courts.
Both programs were somewhat familiar with each other after having sent some combination of their players back in the shortened fall at the Florida Tech Panther Invitational.
“Today was a tough test against a good team,” EC assistant coach
Ben Maxwell said. “I'm very proud of Gipson (Hawn) and Katie (Benn) for their work today. Palm Beach showed up today and didn't let up from the beginning.”
Benn earned her second win of the spring in her singles bout against Maria Jimenez. She battled through an intense and won the tiebreak, 8-6, to claim early momentum on a humid afternoon.
After ceding the second set, Benn finished out the grueling match in the final set with a 10-7 decision at the No. 6 singles position.
Benn and Trapp also toppled Jimenez with her teammate Liddy Robinson with an 8-2 win for the lone EC doubles victory.
Gipson Hawn battled back to win her second set in singles against Victoria Baca, but the Sailfish were able to close out the match. Freshman
Taylor Bullock also battled her opponent in a first-set tiebreak, but Vilja Vahatalo grabbed the lead early on.
The Tritons are back in action this morning against West Virginia State University. The match started at 11 a.m.
