Jesus Silva earned a win in singles competition to highlight his collegiate debut as the Eckerd College men's and women's tennis programs fought hard in defeat against Lynn University, 9-0 (women's) and 8-1 (men's), on Saturday.
The Tritons (0-4 overall) went head-to-head against the top-ranked Fighting Knights women's squad and Lynn fifth-ranked men's program.
“Today's match against Lynn was very tough, but everyone went out there with a positive attitude,” EC assistant coach
Ben Maxwell stated. “All my players used this as a learning experience, and they are all starting to get a glimpse on what it takes to compete at this level.”
Silva, a sophomore from Caracas, Venezuela, earned the headlines with the men's first win of the year in the No. 6 singles slot. Silva overtook Evan Valdes, 6-3, 6-0, to get Eckerd on the scoreboard.
“He showed that he belonged in the lineup,” Maxwell raved. “His attitude has been nothing but world class and the results show it. He has been dedicated on the court and I'm super proud of his effort today.”
Behind 12th (singles) and fourth-ranked (doubles) Vlad Cirla, the Fighting Knights swept the doubles flight to remain undefeated on the year at 6-0 overall.
Fifth-ranked Ioana Ivan led the women's side for Lynn as the Fighting Knights pitched a shutout on the court. The top team in the nation also remains undefeated at 6-0 overall.
The Tritons head to Lakeland on Monday afternoon to continue league play for a home contest against Florida Southern College.
