ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's tennis program matched wits and competed valiantly against second-ranked Barry University on Sunday, falling by a 9-0 decision in the team's spring season opener.
Ranked second in both the ITA National and Regional polls, the Buccaneers (4-1, 3-0 SSC) swept singles and doubles from the Tritons (0-1, 0-1 SSC), while both teams battled frigid temperatures and windy conditions at the Turley Athletic Complex.
The Eckerd women faced Barry's fourth-ranked women's squad yesterday to begin the spring.
“I was happy with everyone's play today,” EC Assistant Coach
Ben Maxwell said. “Barry is a very tough team, but our guys showed a lot of heart and effort today on the court. We're a young team, but I think we will start to see more and more positive things out of everyone as the season progresses.”
Led by Marco Mokryzcki (ranked eighth nationally in singles) and Fabian Groetsch, the Bucs earned a No. 1 doubles win against
Dylan Randazzo and
Stephen Felman, 8-3. Mokryzcki did not enter in the singles competition.
Barry proceeded to win No. 2 and No. 3 doubles entries by respective scores of 8-1.
Randazzo, Felman and
Brian Hill, each managed three points in a single set against their respective opponents.
Connor Ohlsen,
Ben Levy and
Madison Durley, also hit the court for the Tritons in singles matchups.
The Tritons continue their season at Saint Leo University on Tuesday. The road dual will begin at 3 p.m. in Saint Leo.
