ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Eckerd College women's tennis program opened its spring season against one of the nation's top teams on a cold and windy Saturday, falling against No. 4 Barry University, 9-0.
The Buccaneers (3-0, 2-0 SSC) played against Saint Leo University earlier in the day and arrived late to the Turley Athletic Complex, delaying the start time against the Tritons (0-1, 0-1 SSC) until 3:20 p.m.
“We knew that it would be a tough test today and I thought we made some strides carried over (from the fall),” EC assistant coach
Ben Maxwell said. “Our No. 1 and No. 3 doubles played solid and set up their points well; we just need to finish. We're still inexperienced with the number of freshmen we have on the roster.”
The freshmen doubles tandem of
Gipson Hawn and
Erika Fridrik managed to earn three points against Barry's top pairing.
Carson Trapp and
Katie Benn accounted for two points in the No. 3 slot.
Led by No. 21 (singles) Cristina Valladares, the Bucs took the No. 2 doubles matchup, 8-0. Valladares is also ranked No. 26 nationally in doubles with her partner, Caroline Wendling, who was not in attendance at today's match.
The Tritons were swept in every singles matchup even though Trapp gave Sarah Krohnen a great fight in the first set with a 6-3 decision.
Manon Ironside completed an exhibition bout against Barry's Julie Stas.
While the Tritons' men will be in action tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. against the No. 2 Barry squad, the EC women will return to the courts at Saint Leo on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
