LAKELAND, Fla. - Eckerd College freshman
Emilie Hesseldal scored a career-high 20 points in the Tritons' 65-62 loss to the No. 22-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins on Wednesday night.
Hessedal went 10-for-18 from the field and had three rebounds and two assists to round out the night.
Eckerd's defense worked hard to keep the lead under seven points throughout the majority of the first half. Hesseldal had great production in the post to score six points in the final minutes to cut the lead to six at the half.
The Mocs led by eight early in the second half before senior
Taylor Young hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to two. Southern then went on a 9-4 run to bring the score to 45-36 with just under 11 minutes left in the game.
Southern extended their lead to 13 points with just under five minutes remaining in the second half off a fast-break layup from Michaela Hawley (20 points).
With just over three minutes to go in the second half, the Tritons would go on a 8-0 run to cut the lead to two points with 2:33 left in the game. Both teams would go scoreless for the next two minutes of play, but the Mocs would hit two free throws to extend their lead to four points with 17 seconds on the clock.
Young would pull the game within two points with six seconds remaining on the clock. Hawley iced the game at the free-throw line for the Mocs, hitting her first and missing the second to force Eckerd into a long-range three-point miss from Eckerd senior
