Men’s Soccer Stays Undefeated With Shutout Versus Florida Memorial University, 1-0

Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– Not even a heavy pre-game torrential downpour could stop the Eckerd College men's soccer program in its home opener, a successful shutout victory over NAIA-affiliated Florida Memorial University on Friday evening, 1-0.

The Tritons (3-0, 0-0 SSC) won their third straight and kept their unblemished record intact thanks to the game's lone goal by sophomore midfielder Mark Lee in the first half. The Lions (0-2, 0-0 TSC) remained in search of their first tally in the win column.

Florida Memorial outshot Eckerd, 16-10, but the Tritons made their lone corner kick opportunity pay off in the 36th minute as Lee capitalized on the feed from senior Anthony Arico.

Eckerd sophomore Finnish goalkeeper Toni Virtanen kept the Lions off the scoreboard with a stellar effort in net and the help of his defensive unit, recording six saves en route to his first shutout of the year.

A total of seven yellow cards were issued between both programs as Florida Memorial's frustration mounted during the match.

The Tritons head north for their next battle, taking on Montevallo (Ala.) College for a Sunday showdown in neutral Valdosta, Ga. The match is scheduled get underway at 1 p.m.
