Box Score

FLORENCE, S.C. – Junior Matt Knight helped the Eckerd College men's soccer team open up the 2011 season strong, scoring two goals in a 3-1 win over Francis Marion on Thursday.

"It was a great team performance and a great way to start the season," head coach Steve Magee said. "I'm really happy to get a win on the board early against a talented Francis Marion team. It was great to see Matt (Knight) score two goals in his first start as a Triton."

Eckerd came out fast to start the game as senior Thomas Serta headed in the lone goal of the first half in the fifth minute off an assist from senior Jimmy Lawler.

Knight had the best game of his career as a Triton, scoring two goals in the second half with his head. Knight scored his first goal off a long service from sophomore captain Matt Duffy in the 53rd minute. The junior put in his second goal off a cross from junior Anthony Arico in the 70th minute.

The Patriots cut the lead to two goals as sophomore forward Alex Blandin scored in the 85th minute.

Eckerd will travel to Miami Gardens, Fla. to face St. Thomas (Fla.) on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. Results will be posted on eckerdtritons.com.
