ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Lance Kearse scored a career-high 22 points to lift the Eckerd College men's basketball team to a 79-73 overtime win over Lynn on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2011 BlueCross and BlueShield of Florida SSC Basketball Championship.
The No. 3 seed Tritons (21-7) went 25-for-27 from the free-throw line to defeat the No. 6 seed Fighting Knights (7-20) for the third time this season.
The win advances Eckerd into the tournament semifinals in Melbourne, where they will face No. 2 seed Florida Southern at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
John Harper scored 17 points, while Quincy Okolie had 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench. The Tritons held Lynn to 37 percent shooting from the field, including 28 percent (7-for-25) in the first half.
Despite the cold shooting, Lynn fought back from a 35-28 halftime deficit to take a 45-42 lead with 13:53 to play. The teams went back and forth the rest of the way, with Kearse hitting a pair of free throw with 54 seconds left to tie it at 66-66.
Neither team could score during the remainder of regulation – forcing Eckerd's first overtime game of the year.
In the extra period, Lynn went just 2-for-7 from the field, and the Tritons went 9-for-10 from the free-throw line to clinch the victory.
The game saw 14 ties and 13 lead changes.
