Men's Basketball Knocks Off Florida Southern

Eckerd-Florida Southern Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Dale Carn scored 17 points, and the Eckerd College men's basketball team had five scorers in double figures in a 77-70 win over visiting Florida Southern on Wednesday.

Lance Kearse, John Harper and Chris Gray each scored 11 points, and Quincy Okolie added 10, as the Tritons (18-6, 9-5 Sunshine State Conference) avenged a 76-70 loss at FSC last month.

Eckerd shot 56 percent in the second half (51 percent overall) and held the Mocs to 36 percent shooting.

“Our defense is what got us the lead, and I thought we did a good job of relaxing and buckling down defensively late,” said Eckerd head coach Tom Ryan. “This is such a tough league, so any win we can get this time of year is really going to help us in the standings and the region polls.”

Cameron Wooten led five Mocs (18-7, 9-4) in double figures with 14 points.

The Tritons overcame a cold start that saw them fall behind 11-4 six minutes into the game. Eckerd used a 14-3 run during a six-minute stretch late in the half to eventually grab a 36-24 halftime advantage.

Florida Southern managed to tie the game at 64-64 with 4:02 remaining, but the Tritons scored the next nine points to take control.

“They are a really good offensive team,” Eckerd head coach Tom Ryan said of the Mocs. “In the last few minutes, I thought we did a better job defending. They had a couple of open looks late, but I also thought our defense helped get some stops.”

Eckerd will travel to Florida Tech for a 4 p.m. SSC contest on Saturday.
