Saint Leo Invitational Final Results
SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Eckerd College women's golf team put together a strong effort to finish play at the Saint Leo Invitational on Tuesday, improving its cumulative score in the final round by 11 strokes.
The Tritons (374-363--737) remained constant on the leaderboard, wrapping up the tournament in 13th out of 16. Host Saint Leo finished with a wire-to-wire team victory, fending off runner-up Florida Southern College in a close race.
Seminole State College's Elia Folch Sola sank a chip from the rough that hit the flagstick to win medalist honors through an exciting playoff.
The tournament field played the final round in overcast and gusty conditions as the projected heavy rains held off.
“Even without the wind or the rain, the greens play very fast and this is a tough golf course (Lake Govita Country Club),” EC Head Coach
Bill Buttner summarized. “It's still a learning process for us, but each day we're getting better technically. Yesterday was a tough start for us, but we were able to bounce back today.”
Senior
Georgia Gordon carried the mantle as Eckerd's top finisher for the second straight tournament, carding an 81 to finish in the top half of the field at a tie for 47th. Comparatively speaking, she was one of four Tritons in the lineup to post a better second-round score than on Monday.
A 13-stroke differential highlighted a strong showing by
Mara Shingleton who moved up into a tie for 71st after posting an 87. Shingleton bounced back from a tough first round and ultimately tied teammate Jenee Vanderstine in the individual standings.
Vanderstine also trimmed seven shots from her first-round total, wrapping up today with a 90.
Whitney Edwards also knocked off a sizeable nine shots on the scorecard in her final round while
Christina Brewster pulled in at solo 76th overall.
The Tritons will close the fall campaign at the Flagler Fall Slam Invitational next week in St. Augustine on Oct. 24-25 (Monday-Tuesday).
