Box Score
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College women's soccer team had its offense clicking on all cylinders as it took care of business at home in a non-conference afternoon affair against Clearwater Christian College on Tuesday, 5-0.
Emily Johnson and
Callie Pederson each scored two goals,
Dana Treat assisted a pair of scores and freshman
Mia Whylly contributed a goal and an assist.
The Tritons (4-9, 0-5 SSC) designated Tuesday's contest against the Cougars (5-5-1) as a “Kick For A Cure” commemorative event to honor Breast Cancer Awareness month. The players wore vibrant pink jerseys as generously provided by Murphy's Plumbing and Heating, used a pink game ball and conducted various raffles for fans in attendance.
The mothers of Arielle Anahory and
Monica Methot were also paid a tribute to during halftime as recognized survivors of breast cancer. Funds generated from the game will be donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
The Tritons had it going early in each half, scoring just three minutes after the opening whistle and finding the net two minutes after play resumed from halftime.
Johnson shook off a defender near the end line and found Pederson alone at the right side of the box with a feed in the middle. Pederson connected for the early one-goal advantage at the 3:28 mark and the Tritons would continue to ride that momentum.
Just five minutes later,
Brianna Murphy floated a free kick following a Clearwater Christian foul to a crossing
Mia Whylly for the team's second goal in the eighth minute.
EC's 2-0 lead would up until halftime and the Tritons kept their foot on the accelerator to begin the final period.
Johnson sidestepped another defender and deked out CC goalkeeper Ahna Boley in the 47th minute, but she capped the scoring with a hustling, all-out 50-yard sprint that forced Boley and an undisclosed Cougars' defender to collide in the box that left her one goal shy of the hat trick.
Pederson joined Johnson's company with her second goal of the contest in the 51st minute following precision one-touch passes across the field from Whylly and Treat. The crisp lateral movement left Boley out of position from the left side and she found paydirt for another EC insurance score.
Morgan Crescent and
Caroline Bond each split duties behind net, playing 45 minutes, respectively. The Tritons' defense limited Clearwater Christian to no shots in the game.
The Tritons are back on the road on Thursday, heading to Florida College in Temple Terrace for a make-up game that was originally scheduled back on Sept. 22. The non-conference matchup is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
