LAKELAND, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's basketball team could not overcome a cold start in a 76-70 loss at Florida Southern on Wednesday.
Brandon Jenkins and Brett Bailey each scored 17 points, as FSC (11-4, 3-1 Sunshine State Conference) won for the eighth time in its last nine games.
The Mocs had four scorers reach double figures, as did the Tritons (11-4, 2-3), who were paced by Lance Kearse's 17 points. Woody Taylor tallied 11 points, while John Harper and Wayne Sears Jr. each added 10.
Eckerd trailed 34-19 at halftime, as the visitors were hampered by 21 percent shooting. The Tritons were just 6-for-28 from the field and 7-for-12 (58 percent) from the free-throw line in the first half.
Eckerd improved in the second half, shooting 58 percent. The effort helped the Tritons cut the deficit to 49-47 with 10:43 remaining following an 8-0 run.
But FSC used a 7-0 spurt to grab a 61-51 advantage with 6:40 to play. The Tritons never got closer than the final margin.
The Tritons will play host to Nova Southeastern at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the McArthur Center.
