Volleyball Goes 2-0 on Saturday at UWF Tournament

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Eckerd Tritons volleyball team defeated North Alabama and West Alabama in Saturday action of the Comfort Inn-Vitational, hosted by the University of West Florida. 

The Tritons finished the event 3-1.



MATCH #1 (Eckerd vs. West Alabama)

PENSACOLA, Fla.Lindsay Biggs and Ariana Chinn combined for 25 kills and a .391 hit percentage to lead the EckerdCollege volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-15, 25-23) over West Alabama on Saturday at the Comfort Inn-Vitational.
 
Biggs, a true freshman, had 13 kills and seven digs, while Chinn had 12 kills in her season debut. The duo helped the Tritons (2-1) hit .404 overall.
 
Taylor Whaley recorded nine kills on just 11 swings, and freshman setter Madison Burr continued a good serving tournament with five aces.
 
Eckerd was nearly flawless offensively in the first set, tallying 17 kills on just 22 total attacks (.773 percentage) to take a quick lead. The Tritons won 10 of the final 12 points of the second set to take a commanding 2-0 advantage, and Eckerd held off UWA (0-2) in the final frame.
 

MATCH #2 (Eckerd vs. North Alabama)

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Eckerd College volleyball team closed out the Comfort Inn-Vitational with a 3-1 win (25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 25-18) over North Alabama on Saturday.
 
The Tritons (3-1) used another balanced offensive attack combined with some strong defense to finish off a 2-0 afternoon.
 
Freshman outside hitter Lindsay Biggs had eight kills, and three Tritons had seven kills apiece. Defensively, Eckerd took advantage of 11 blocks – compared to just four for UNA.
 
The Tritons also recorded eight service aces, while the Lions managed only three. Eckerd finished the four-match weekend with 25 aces.
 
The Tritons, who swept West Alabama earlier in the day, struggled early. UNA (1-2) led 17-9 in the first set before the Tritons went on a 16-6 run to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Lions used a 12-5 spurt to close out the second set and even the match. But the Eckerd defense helped the Tritons race ahead for good, holding UNA to a -.032 hit percentage in the third set. The Tritons finished the match by scoring 11 of the final 17 points.
 
Eckerd will return to action next weekend, competing in the Peggy Martin Challenge in Warrensburg, Mo.
