MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech used a balanced attack to defeat the Eckerd College volleyball team 3-1 (25-17, 30-32, 25-20, 25-11) on Wednesday evening at the Clemente Center.
Frankie Brown had 15 kills, one of four Panthers to record double-figure kills, as the Panthers (6-8, 1-4 Sunshine State Conference) picked up their first SSC win of 2010.
Shelby DeNeice had 14 kills and 17 digs, while Janelle Branch had 14 kills on just 22 attacks. Branch also had nine total blocks for the Panthers, who tallied 14 total blocks.
Freshman Lindsay Biggs had 15 kills and 13 digs to pace the Tritons (5-9, 0-5). It was her sixth double-double of the year.
Junior libero Hallie Ward had a team-high 21 digs, and Olivia Fraser had six total blocks.
Eckerd hit .141 overall, while Florida Tech registered a .247 mark. The Panthers hit .405 in the final set.
It was a tight opening set before Florida Tech won nine of the last 11 points to take a 1-0 lead. The Tritons came back in the second, fighting off a set point before eventually tying the match.
The Panthers, though, grabbed the momentum in the third – taking five of the final six points to grab a 2-1 edge. Branch had four kills and four blocks in the final set.
Eckerd will return home at 4 p.m. on Saturday, hosting SSC rival Lynn at the McArthur Center.
