TAMPA, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's soccer team upset No. 9 Tampa Tuesday 2-1, earning their second Sunshine State Conference win of the season.
“I thought our central defense held strong throughout the game,” head coach Steve Magee said. “Freshman Mark Lee did a great job of distributing the ball; it was a huge team effort. It was good to see both attacking players get the goals. ”
A minute into the second half Spartan's forward Lister Warern missed a penalty kick high, giving the Tritons momentum that helped carry them through the game.
Senior midfielder Kiki Gonzalez scored his first goal of the season in the 56th minute from six-yards out to give the Tritons a 1-0 lead.
Senior forward George Marchant buried a shot in the lower left corner in the 59th minute off an assist from defender Matt Duffy, pushing the lead to two goals. Marchant leads the Tritons in goals (3) and shots (27) this season.
Tampa responded late in the second half, when Warren scored in the 82nd minute. The Tritons held strong for the remainer of the half to earn the win over their conference rival.
The Spartans had 15 shots in the game, while the Tritons had 14; Eckerd had five shots on goal. Eckerd goalkeeper Toni Virtanen tallied one save on the night.
