Tritons Rally Falls Just Short at NSU

Eckerd-NSU Box Score

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Eckerd College volleyball team dropped its second straight five-set decision in as many days on Saturday, as Nova Southeastern hung on to top the visiting Tritons 3-2 (26-24, 25-13, 20-25, 13-25, 15-12) in Sunshine State Conference action.

Danielle Graham and Rachel Woodson each had 13 kills for the Sharks (4-6, 1-1 SSC), while Kathleen Yony had a match-high 32 digs. NSU recorded 80 digs overall.

Ariana Chinn had a match-high 17 kills for Eckerd (5-6, 0-3), and Lindsay Biggs tallied a double-double (15 kills, 10 digs) for the fifth time in her last seven matches. Bri Smith also had a season-best 42 assists.

The Tritons, who fell in five sets at Barry on Friday, just missed on completing a thrilling comeback.

After taking the last four points to steal the opening set, NSU seemingly had all the momentum after easily taking the second set to grab a 2-0 lead.

Eckerd, however, held the Sharks to a .108 hit percentage in the third to cut the margin to 2-1. The Tritons continued the rally in the fourth, using a 16-5 run to close out the set and force the deciding fifth.

NSU opened the set by taking the first four points. After Eckerd fought back to eventually take an 11-10 lead, the Sharks closed the match by winning five of the final six points.

The Tritons did hold NSU to a .164 hit percentage overall, with junior libero Hallie Ward posting a team-best 22 digs.

Eckerd will continue SSC play on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match at Saint Leo.
