LAKELAND, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's soccer team defeated No. 23 ranked Florida Southern 2-1 Saturday in their first conference game of the season.
“It was a very even game; one goal looked like it was going to win it from the start,” head coach Steve Magee said. “Our guys were very resilient defensively tonight. I'm very proud of the effort tonight and happy to get the win in the first conference game of the season.”
Eckerd scored first in the 29th minute with a goal from sophomore
Matt Thompson off an assist from
Daniel Lopez and
George Marchant. Less than nine minutes later, Florida Southern equalized with a goal from senior Givi Kokaia in the 38th minute.
Junior defender
Jimmy Lawler gave the Tritons the lead in the 72nd minute off an assist from freshman
Mark Lee.
Both teams had 11 shots in the game. Freshman goalkeeper
Toni Virtanen had four saves, including a key save in the final seconds of the game.
