ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Seniors Jon Bonner and Alex McDonald were able to enjoy their last home game of the season as the Eckerd men's tennis team earned a conference win against Saint Leo University Friday evening at the Turley Athletic Complex. No. 41 Tritons defeated the Lions 6-3.
The Tritons (7-9, 2-4 SSC) were able to take two doubles matches away from the Lions (3-18, 0-6 SSC). The team of Ben Maxwell and Adam Hopkins defeated their opponents, 8-3, in the No.1 spot. James Walker and Aaron Kleefield won a very tough match in the No. 3 slot, defeating their opponent 9-8, then coming back to win the tie-breaker 7-3.
Eckerd won four of its singles matches. Hisa Sato was the No. 2 singles winner, winning his matches 6-3, 6-0. Hopkins was victorious in the No. 3 slot, winning 6-2, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, #Erik Thunberg took out his opponent, 6-1, 6-2. Bonner was able to defeat his opponent in No. 5 singles 6-4, 7-6, (7-4). Both No. 1 and No. 6 singles matches were intense, as they both went into tie breakers. Maxwell suffered the hard loss at the No. 1 slot, taking the first match away from his opponent, 6-4. He dropped the next two matches 6-4, 7-6, and then fell short in the tie breaker, losing 7-4. No. 6 singles player McDonald lost his match 7-6, (7-3), 6-2.
The Tritons will be back in action April 15th, as they get set to participate in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, which will be held at the Beerman Tennis Complex in Lakeland, Florida.
