Women's Tennis Opens Season with 9-0 Loss to No. 9 Barry

, Fla. - The Eckerd College Women's Tennis Team (0-1, 0-1 SSC) opened its 2010 campaign on Sunday, falling to the ninth-ranked Barry Buccaneers (5-0, 3-0 SSC), 9-0, at Eckerd's Bullard Tennis Courts.

In doubles action, the top-flight duo of Emmy Laing and Amanda Teets put up the best fight, pushing a combination of Angie Werschel and Mia Fiocca before falling, 8-4.

In singles play, Laing, Eckerd's top-flight player, held her own against Werschel, the nation's 10th-ranked player, winning the second set, 6-3, before losing in a tiebreaker, 10-8. In sixth flight singles, Sonnet Ludwig nearly forced another tiebreaker after dropping the first set, 6-1, but instead lost the second set, 6-4.

Eckerd will return to the courts on Tuesday, February 23 as it travels to Tampa, Fla. to face the Tampa Spartans in SSC action.
