Zaronn Cann led all scorers with 19 points and nine rebounds to help lead the Eckerd Tritons (15-8, 8-5 SSC) past the Tampa Spartans (10-13, 4-10 SSC), 63-54, on Wednesday evening at UT's Martinez Center.
In the first half, Eckerd got off to a hot start, offensively and defensively, jumping out to a 10-0 run to start the game, en route to eventually leading 10-1 with 13:04 left in the half. Tampa, however, responded by going on a 24-3 run to eventually take a 25-13 lead with 3:31 to go. A jumper by UT's Ted Amendola with 1:05 to go led to the Spartans' 14-point, 31-17 lead.
To start the second half, the Tritons stormed to a 17-0 run, lead by five points by Cann, giving them a 34-31 advantage with 16:38 left.
After Spartans took a 45-42 lead, Eckerd would again go on a long run, this one of a 16-5 variety, to regain the lead, 58-50, after another basket by Cann with 1:50 to go.
This run seemed to ice the game as Eckerd got two blocked shots down the stretch by
Lance Kearse, enabling it to settle for the nine-point win.
For the game, Eckerd out-shot Tampa 48.8 percent to 34.9 percent from the field while the Spartans out-rebounded the Tritons, 28-25.
John Harper and
Chris Gray scored 11 and 10 points, respectively while Kearse added 10. Anthony LaBruno led Tampa with 14 points.
Eckerd will return to action on Saturday, February 20 as it hosts Lynn at 4pm at the McArthur Center.
