ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Triton women's basketball team won on Wednesday, as they defeated the Florida Southern Moccasins (17-6, 7-5 SSC) by the score of 71-69 at the McArthur Center. This improves Eckerd's record to 8-12 overall and 2-9 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The first half of the game was intense, as both teams bounced back and forth for the half time lead. The Tritons had a 13-point lead at the 4:44 mark, but the Mocs managed to make their way to cut the lead, going on an 11-point run to make the intermission score 35-31 with the Tritons in the lead.
In the start of the second half, the Tritons continued to build upon their lead with Ashley Lutz and Tijana Brdar making baskets of their own and Taylor Young sinking in a three-pointer at the 18:53 mark. However, with costly fouls made by the Tritons, Florida Southern was able to make a come back within the last 10 minutes of the game, making the second half a nail-biter. The Mocs were able to close the six-point Triton lead to a three-point lead at the 3:50 mark. But the Tritons answered right back, extending their lead by seven with just minutes left of play. With the Tritons having a 71-66 lead, Florida Southern's final point came from Megan Dzikas, who drilled a three-pointer with just 25 seconds left of the game, making it a 71-69 game and a Triton win.
Lutz led the way for Eckerd, having 22 points with four assists and three steals, while Brdar had 17 and Young had 13.
Eckerd will be back in action Saturday, February 13th, as they travel to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech. Tip off is at 2 pm.
