ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Eckerd College men's basketball team jumped out to a huge early lead en route to an 88-53 win over Puerto Rico-Bayamon on Friday at the EC Thanksgiving Classic.
Wayne Sears Jr., and Lance Kearse each scored 12 points, and Darrien Mack added 11 points and eight rebounds, as the Tritons (5-1) won their fourth straight.
Eckerd out-rebounded the Cowboys 54-28 (20-13 offensive). The Tritons shot 64 percent in the first half and 49 percent overall. Eckerd held UPR-Bayamon to 26 percent shooting.
The Tritons, who never trailed, scored 17 of the game's first 20 points to take quick control. Sears Jr., capped off a 12-1 run with back-to-back layups midway through the half to increase the lead to 29-6.
Eckerd had 10 players score in the first half and led 51-21 at halftime.
The Tritons never led by less than 22 in the second half.
Melvin Rivera led the Cowboys (0-4) with 18 points.
The Tritons will wrap up the two-day tournament against Queens (N.C.) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Queens fell 63-59 against Tampa earlier on Friday.
