ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Celeste Bonter had 16 kills, and the visiting Lions had 11 total blocks as Saint Leo took a 3-1 win (25-18, 26-24, 21-25, 25-18) over the Eckerd College volleyball team on Wednesday.
Kaitlin McKenna had 11 kills on just 23 swings (.435 percentage), and Leah Perry had five total blocks. The Lions (12-10, 7-4 Sunshine State Conference) also had four players with at least 15 digs.
Lindsay Biggs and Taylor Whaley had 16 kills apiece for the Tritons (7-15, 1-11). The duo each had a double-double, with Biggs posting 20 digs and Whaley, 10. Hallie Ward also had a match-high 23 digs.
Saint Leo used an 8-3 run midway through the first set in grabbing a 1-0 lead. Bruna Rocha (10 kills overall) and McKenna combined for nine kills.
The Tritons had a chance to even the match in the second, eventually getting a set point. But the Lions rallied with three straight points to close it out and grab a 2-0 advantage.
Eckerd cut the deficit in half in the third set, hitting a match-high .286. Biggs came up huge with seven kills on 16 swings.
Saint Leo, though, took seven of the final eight points to close it out.
Eckerd will play its final non-conference match of the year at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Palm Beach Atlantic.
