Volleyball Sweeps Past Valdosta State

Eckerd-Valdosta State Box Score

VALDOSTA, Ga. – A very young Eckerd College volleyball team had been finding itself on the short end of some narrow losses this season. But it all changed on Saturday night.

The Tritons scored some clutch points throughout the evening en route to an impressive 3-0 win (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) at Valdosta State in non-conference action.

Freshman outside hitter Lindsay Biggs had 12 kills and 10 digs, while fellow freshman hitter Kaleigh Humphrey had nine kills and 10 digs, as Eckerd (6-12) snapped a 10-match losing streak.

The Tritons tallied five service aces, including three from freshman setter Madison Burr. Biggs recorded her ninth double-double of the season, including her fourth in the last five matches.

Katie Onushko paced Valdosta State (16-7) with 11 kills, while Ruthie King had 10 kills and a match-high 18 digs.

The Tritons had fallen in five sets in five of their previous 10 matches, but the visitors got some key rallies in each set on Saturday.

Eckerd won three of the final four points in all three sets – after holding a slim one-point advantage before the spurts – to clinch a sweep for the fourth time this year.

The Tritons will jump back into Sunshine State Conference play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at No. 3 Tampa.
