FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Matthew Ilter scored two goals to lead Nova Southeastern to a 4-2 win over the Eckerd College men's soccer team on Wednesday evening.
Ilter's goal in the 48th minute gave the hosts a commanding two-goal lead and lifted the Sharks (5-4-2, 1-4 Sunshine State Conference) to their first league win of 2010.
Matt Duffy and Anthony Arico provided the goals for Eckerd (5-6, 2-4). Duffy's goal was his first of the year.
For most of the night, the Tritons did a good job of spoiling NSU's momentum. After Ilter opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, the Sharks made it 2-0 on an Aly Hassan goal in the 36th minute.
Eckerd, though, fought back with a goal two minutes later, with Duffy scoring on a penalty kick.
The Sharks got the momentum back less than three minutes into the second half when Ilter scored on a deflection. Eckerd, however, cut the deficit to 3-2 nine seconds later on Arico's goal.
The Tritons nearly tied it in the 72nd minute when Turner Humphries' shot hit the post. But NSU put it away in the 87th minute when Craig Heenighan scored off a corner kick.
Eckerd out-shot NSU 16-14.
The Tritons will return home this weekend, hosting Montreat College at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Turley Athletic Complex. The game will be part of a doubleheader with the women's team, which will play Montreat at 11 a.m.
