Women's Basketball Loses to Barry in SSC Opener

Box Score

ST. PETERSBURG
, Fla. - Taylor Young led Eckerd with 15 points while Jordan Stacey added eight points and 10 rebounds but the Barry Buccaneers (8-3, 1-1 SSC), led by Mariesa Greene's 20 points and 10 rebounds, defeated the Eckerd Tritons (5-4, 0-1 SSC) by a score of 50-46 on Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Center.

In what was largely a defensive struggle, the teams combined for nine ties and eight lead changes. In the first half, Ashley Lutz gave the Tritons their largest lead of the evening at 18-15 with 3:52 to go. Barry's Shanna Suttington, however, tied the game with a three, sparking the Bucs on a 9-0 run to close out the half ahead, 24-18.

A three-pointer by BU's Tilde Ahlin open the second half and pushed Barry's lead to its largest margin at 27-18 with 19:41 to play. A pair of layups by Lutz, however, proved to bookend a 12-2 run by the Tritons, giving Eckerd a 30-29 lead with 15:29 left.

After Barry took a 45-43 lead with 1:35 to go, Young tied the game at 45-45 with a basket. Unfortunately for the Tritons, the Bucs would go 3-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute and would hold on to four-point lead with the help of two key Eckerd turnovers.

For the game, Kati Rausberg added eight points and seven rebounds while Lutz tallied seven points and four assists. Ahlin added nine points and six boards for the Bucs.

Eckerd will return to action on Wednesday, January 6 as it travels to Lakeland, Fla. to battle the Florida Southern Moccasins at 5:30pm at Jenkins Fieldhouse.
